Nokia 5530XpressMusic: First Impressions

The newest addition to my arsenal of mobile phones is the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. As part of the routine, here-below is an overview of the device before the big review – a small “first impressions” piece. This will give readers a quick heads-up on what the device feels like out of the box, and would help me set some signposts for the review. Being totally objective with this, expect some points to be proven wrong when the full in-depth review comes out. Here it goes:

- The device feels solid except for…

- …the back-cover which is loose and irritating at times.

- The lock/unlock button is a bit loose.

- The audio jack is at the bottom side of the device; would have loved to see the audio jack round the top - more convenient for playing music while the device is tucked away in a pocket.

- The volume buttons on the side feel cheap.

- The size of the device is amazing; it’s small and slim, and feels great in hand.

- The 4GB microSD card is a good choice though an 8GB card would have been more than welcome.

- The camera button is a tad rigid.

- The stainless steel frame is a nice touch.

- And so are the included earphones (in-ear, finally).

- Not my type of screen (size does matter).

- The battery is 1000mAh, but looking at the size of the phone, I can forgive that.

After turning it on for the first time:

- Boot-up time is amazingly fast.

- The screen is way more sensitive than previous touchscreen Nokias

- Switching themes is swift.

- Theme effects are turned on by default; without them, the device performs even faster.

- Kinetic scrolling rocks.

- Speakers are powerful.

- The device does not charge off USB. You have to use a 2mm normal charger.

- The screen rotates faster than any previous Nokia I have owned/tested.

- The camera is good, but not that good.

- The flash is impressive, considering its size…

- The drop-down XpressMusic Media Bar is also present.

Now on to some cruel testing. Expect my full-review real soon; meanwhile if you have any questions or feel like there’s an aspect you’d want to see covered within the review please do not hesitate to let me know.
