E72 Navi Key live in action!

Many have asked for this and here it is: the E72's Optical Navi Key in action, on video, showing some real smooth and fast scrolling.

Reminder: I'm still using the prototype which I've got over a month ago, so I'm not sure if the final version of the device will be similar. The Navi Key might become more/less sensitive and more accurate on the final version.

I've criticized it at times because I never found it to be useful (or accurate) within the main menu. However, within the browser, it can come in pretty handy. As you might notice in the video, you can scroll anywhere you want using it (up, down, diagonal...) or you can use the normal d-pad (using the 4-way arrows) but you end up touching it often when you do that. So I suppose it should either be turned on or off, depending on your usage. Let's hope Nokia adds a keyboard shortcut for it. If not, some 3rd party app will!

Enjoy! video

  2. Hmm seems useful. It would be nice to be able to turn it on/off depending on the application that is active.

I'm still waiting for the phone. it is taking forever.

Have you been using the E72 a lot lately? How is it regarding firmware stability? (crashes, mem leaks, etc)

    thx

  4. How did you manage to get the Optical Navi Key to scroll that fast? I have tried to set the sensitivity to both "low", "medium" and "high" (no notable difference) and still can only get one click per stroke...

  5. mimstyle, I'm afraid you can't. You have to use 3rd party browsers like Opera.

Beowulf, yes using it as my main phone besides the N97 which has my other SIM card. The recent FW improved the browser which used to quit while viewing a "heavy loaded" page. No crashes, though the Navi Key sometimes needs a restart to work properly. No memory leaks, RAM is acceptable, loving the 250MB phone memory, and it's too damn fast!

Michel, it's already available in Lebanon and selling for $499. GPRS is great, Nokia Messaging is really delivering my emails on the spot. Several tests showed it's almost immediate; it really is push email, as NM keeps monitoring the servers of your various inboxes and pushes any new emails you get. The Nokia Messaging Chat application (still in Beta) is really nice to use and has support for Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi Chat.

Anonymous, it's really about the touch and not the key. Set your sensitivity to "high" and use your entire thumb not just the tip of it, like when you're using a thumbprint reader on a laptop or something. No need to press, just slide your thumb up and down gently.

  6. Hi Ant1,

OT: Have a question, how do i show my activated gmail and yahoo accounts on the active standby mode? i disabled them and couldn't figure out how to put them back.

    Thanks!

  7. Easy, go to menu -> control panel -> settings -> general -> personalization -> standby mode -> mode settings -> email notifications.

Alternatively, you could go to the Email app wherever you have it installed then to settings -> global settings -> Home Screen (last option in the list). This will take you to the same place as above.

You can display two mailboxes simultaneously. Enjoy!

  10. Well I have checked the link above, I cannot deny nor confirm it. My handset is a proto and not a retail one. But I have investigated the matter further, asked everyone I know has purchased the handset and nobody seemed to report those issues, except one or two crashes due to some newly installed applications. If anyone should have that problem please post here and discuss it with us. Meanwhile, I'll try to get my hands on a retail unit and test it out for those defects. Thanks!

  12. Hey Mo, yes it does. But just for sake of being safe do a quick backup on the memory card before updating, I always do that. My last update did not delete anything.

  15. to restart your E72 you should use Jbak TaskMan Version 1.0 R11. Restart function in signed version 1.0 doesnt work.

  16. Can you compare the E72 or E63? What is the best choice between both.

  17. Compare E72 to E63? Difference between a Merc C-class with an S-class, despite the fact that both are Mercs.

Anyways, here is the comparision: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=2831&idPhone2=2599

BTW, you can surely compare the E71 to E72 which is like comparing the higher version of the Merc E-class with the entry version of S class.

  18. I enjoyed following the whole entry, I always thought one of the main things to count when you write a blog is learning how to complement the ideas with images, that's exploiting at the maximum the possibilities of a ciber-space! Good work on this entry!
